Biography

Andrew is Director of the Centre for Research into Freemasonry, the first such centre to be established in a British university. Andrew studied history at the University of London. He was a curator in the Department of Manuscripts in the British Library from 1979-2000. Among the many jobs he undertook in the British Library was the planning and supervision of the move of the Manuscript Collections from the British Museum building to the Librarys new premises at St Pancras. He was the principal library contact for the British Library's Electronic Beowulf project.

The history of freemasonry has been neglected by professional historians in Britain, but is a very rich field of investigation. Andrew has lectured and published widely on the history of freemasonry since the establishment of the Centre in 2001. Among the recent activities undertaken by the Centre has been an exhibition at the Library and Museum of Freemasonry on the 18th-century artist and engraver John Pine.

Andrew is also one of the country's leading experts on the application of new technologies to humanities research, and is a member of the management team of the University's Humanities Research Institute. Andrew is active as a medieval historian, with a particular interest in the history of the library of Sir Robert Cotton and in the library of Sir Robert Cotton. Andrew contributed the articles on the leaders of the rising of 1381 to the new Dictionary of National Biography.

Andrew has been an editor of the British Library's Studies in Medieval Culture series. He was a member of the ACO-HUM Working Group on History and Historical Informatics from 1996-99. Among the advisory panels on which he currently serves are: Medieval Records Publication Working Party, National Archives; JISC Images Working Party; Manuscripts Working Party of the Consortium for European Research Libraries; and Publications Committee, Institute of Historical Research, University of London.
